Who each one suits
SimpleMind suits people who use more than one kind of device. It lists Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android, so a map can follow you from a phone to a work PC.
MindmapPal suits people on iPhone and iPad who need to work with .xmind files, want a password on a map, and prefer that nothing needs an account. It does not run on Windows or Android.
Free-form or structured
SimpleMind describes a free-form layout, where you place topics anywhere, and several auto layouts for brainstorming. MindmapPal offers ten structures, such as mind map, logic chart, fishbone, timeline and matrix, and you can switch a map between them.
Files and sharing
SimpleMind’s features page lists PDF, image and outline exports, and says syncing across platforms uses cloud services. It does not list .xmind or OPML. If you need those, MindmapPal is built for them, and the XMind viewer opens a .xmind file in your browser today.
