MindmapPal vs XMind

XMind makes the .xmind format and runs on desktop, web and mobile, including Windows, Linux and Android. MindmapPal is a native iPhone and iPad app, coming soon, that opens and exports .xmind and keeps maps as files on your device.

Who each one suits

XMind is the app that makes .xmind files, and it runs on nearly every platform. If you work on Windows, Linux or Android, or want a web version, XMind covers it and MindmapPal does not.

MindmapPal is for people on iPhone and iPad who receive or keep .xmind files and want a native app that opens them without an account. It also opens OPML and Markdown, and works offline.

Moving files between them

A .xmind file opens in MindmapPal, and MindmapPal exports .xmind again, so you can share maps with people who use XMind. Password-protected .xmind files open with their password and stay protected when you export.

XMind’s own guide lists OPML and Markdown among the formats it imports and exports, so the two apps share common ground.

Without either app

The XMind viewer on this site opens a .xmind file in your browser. The file stays on your device. See opening files for the steps, or the guide to opening a .xmind file without XMind.

MindmapPal is not on the App Store yet. You can join the waiting list on the home page.
