Exporting

Why an .xmind export asks to write the file afresh

What the "This file can’t be updated in place" question means when you export .xmind from MindmapPal, and how to keep everything in your original file.

Steps

  1. Read the "Export .xmind" question that appeared beside the map.
  2. Choose Download anyway to get a newly written .xmind file, or Cancel to stop.
  3. To keep the original untouched, keep it as it is and export Markdown or PNG for sharing.

What the question says

“This file can’t be updated in place, so the export writes it afresh. Some of its content may change or be left out.” The buttons are Cancel and Download anyway.

When you export an edited .xmind, the tool normally changes only what you edited and leaves the rest of the file as it was. Sometimes that is not possible for a particular file. The tool never writes the file afresh without asking you.

What to do

Your original file is never changed, because the export is a new download. Keep the original until you have checked the new one.

You can also

Export Markdown or OPML if you only need the topics and notes, or a PNG to share a picture of the map. A map that is not from a file, such as one you started from a blank page, never triggers this question.
