Export a map as PNG, .xmind, Markdown or OPML
How to export from the MindmapPal web tools, which formats you can choose, and what Markdown and OPML leave out compared with a .xmind file.
Steps
- Choose Export in the toolbar to open the "Export as" list.
- Pick PNG image, .xmind file, Markdown or OPML.
- For Markdown or OPML, read the note about what is left out, then choose Export Markdown or Export OPML.
- Save the file your browser downloads. If it did not download, choose Save file.
The four formats
- PNG image: a picture of the sheet you are looking at. It is drawn in your browser.
- .xmind file: the whole map. An unedited .xmind goes out as the file you opened. An edited one is updated in place so the rest of the file stays as it was.
- Markdown: a Markdown outline, with a heading or list item for each topic.
- OPML: an OPML outline for outliners and other mind map apps.
The file is named from your map’s title. If the title has nothing usable, it is “Untitled map”.
What Markdown and OPML leave out
Before the first Markdown or OPML export the tool says: “Markdown keeps this sheet’s topics and notes, not pictures, styles, relationships and the rest. A .xmind file keeps everything.” Only the sheet you are on is exported. Tick Don’t show this again to hide the note; this browser remembers it.
If you need everything, export .xmind.
After the download
The panel “Your map is ready” appears with Save file, which saves the same file again if your browser held the download back. Close it with ×, and it stays away for a week.
The panel also says that MindmapPal for iPhone and iPad opens .xmind, OPML and Markdown files, with a link to join the waiting list.
If the export fails
- “This map is larger than this browser can draw in one image, so the PNG was scaled down.” The PNG still downloads, smaller.
- “This map is too large to draw as a PNG image. Export .xmind to keep everything.”
- “A picture in this map stopped the PNG from being made. Export .xmind to keep everything.”
- “The export didn’t work. Your map is unchanged.”
Nothing is uploaded. The file is made in your browser. See privacy.
