Open and export password-protected .xmind files
How the MindmapPal web tools open a password-protected .xmind file, why such a map is not autosaved, and what happens when you export it.
Steps
- Open the file with Open file, or drop it on the map area.
- When "This file is password-protected" appears, type the password in the Password field and choose Open.
- Work on the map, then choose Export and pick .xmind to get a protected file again.
Opening the file
The tool asks: “This file is password-protected. Enter its password to open it here. The password stays on this device.” If the file has a hint, it is shown as “Hint: …”. The Open button stays off until you type something. Cancel or Esc stops without opening.
A wrong password shows “That password didn’t open the file. Try again.” and asks again.
Two messages mean the file cannot be opened here at all, and your current map is unchanged:
- “This browser can’t open password-protected files, so this one wasn’t opened.”
- “This file’s protection isn’t supported, so it wasn’t opened.”
Protected maps are not autosaved
A saved copy would hold the map without its password, so the tool does not make one. You will see: “This map is from a password-protected file, so it isn’t saved in this browser. Keep this tab open while you work.” The status reads “Not being saved”.
Export a file before you close the tab. If the tab or the map tool crashes, the map is gone, and the message says so.
Opening a protected file does not remove the map already saved in this browser. That saved copy stays as it was.
Exporting
- .xmind keeps the password.
- PNG, Markdown and OPML have no password. The tool warns you first: “The Markdown file won’t have a password. Anyone who gets it can see this map.” Choose the export button in the panel to go on, or Cancel.
See exporting a map for the formats.
