Mind maps for product managers
How product managers use mind maps to scope features, outline a PRD, sketch personas and map a roadmap, with templates you can open in your browser.
Who this is for
Product managers who turn a vague problem into a scoped feature, write the spec and get a team to ship it. The work sits between users, design, engineering and the business, and each wants a different cut of the same plan.
What a mind map does for product managers
Scope a feature before the spec
Put the feature in the centre, then branch user problem, must-haves, nice-to-haves, out of scope and open questions.
Outline a PRD
Map background, goals, requirements, metrics and rollout as branches, then export Markdown as the skeleton of the document.
Keep personas next to the roadmap
Give each persona a branch of jobs, pains and triggers, so a feature debate can point back to who it is for.
Plan a launch across teams
Branch by owner, such as engineering, marketing and support, with dates and dependencies under each.
Templates to start from
Product roadmap mind map templateA product roadmap mind map on a timeline, from now to next quarter to later, with the vision, themes, bets for each phase, and what is out of scope.
Customer journey map mind map templateA customer journey map as a mind map, from awareness to consideration, purchase, first use, support and loyalty, with what customers do, feel and need.
Product launch plan mind map templateA product launch plan mind map that runs from six weeks out to the first week after, with the goal, pitch, press kit, launch-day tasks and risks.
User persona mind map templateA user persona mind map with background, goals, frustrations, behaviour and a quote, to describe a typical customer for design and marketing.
Sprint retrospective mind map templateA sprint retrospective mind map in four squares, what went well, what did not, ideas and actions, plus the sprint's facts and last time's follow-ups.
Competitor analysis mind map templateA competitor analysis mind map comparing rivals on offer, price, reputation and reach, to find the gap you can own and the first move to test.
Why a map helps with product work
A spec is read top to bottom, but a product decision is made by weighing branches against each other. A map shows what you have decided, what is open and what you have ruled out, on one screen.
Where to start
For direction, start from the product roadmap template; for a single feature, start from the product launch template and delete what your feature does not need. Keep an “Out of scope” branch: it settles more arguments than any other.
