Size limits and very large maps in the web tools
The web tools open files up to 50 MB and 220,000 topics. What the messages mean for large maps, large PNG exports and saving a map in the browser.
Steps
- If a file will not open, check it is under 50 MB and has fewer than 220,000 topics.
- For a large map, export .xmind rather than PNG to keep everything.
- If the map is too large to save in the browser, keep the tab open and export a file as you work.
Limits for opening
A file can be up to 50 MB and hold up to 220,000 topics. Larger ones are not opened, and your current map is unchanged:
- “This file is over the 50 MB limit, so it wasn’t opened.”
- “This map is too large to open here. It has more than 220,000 topics.”
- “This browser ran out of memory opening the file. Close other tabs and try again.”
A big map can be slow in a small or older browser. Closing other tabs helps.
Saving a large map
The copy in your browser can be too large or too deep to save:
- “This map is too large to save in the browser. Keep this tab open while you work.”
- “This very deep map is not being saved yet. Keep this tab open, and it will save as soon as it can.” It tries again by itself.
Export a .xmind file to keep a map the browser cannot save.
Exporting a large map
A PNG is drawn by your browser, which has its own limit on image size. A map that is too large is scaled down (“the PNG was scaled down”) or, if it cannot be drawn in time, not made: “This map is too large to draw as a PNG image. Export .xmind to keep everything.” iPhone and iPad browsers allow smaller images than a computer.
Markdown, OPML and .xmind exports do not have this limit.
